Designed to put some bite into the Mustang lineup at the turn of the millennium, the 1999-2001 SVT Cobra trims introduced a powerful new package with aggressive styling that would produce even more vigorous variants over the following years. The 1999 SVT Cobra, which came in just four colors, put a 4.6L DOHC V8 into the engine compartment, developing 320 horses and 317 ft-lbs of torque to drive the Cobra from 0-60 mph in a stinging 5.5 seconds. Able to do the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds and topping out at 160 mph, this serpent-badged roadhog featured a new Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) designed to be interchangeable with the GT's solid rear axle to allow easy IRS upgrades on the GT, too. Coupes cost $27,470 MSRP, while the showroom price for a ragtop was a bit higher at $31,470. A Tremec T45 5-speed manual transmission helped give extra edginess to the Cobra's performance. Though the 2001 SVT Cobra performed much like the 1999 and had the same engine and acceleration specs, it had plenty of exciting updates, too, including 8 colors in place of the original four and unique Cobra seats in leather and alcantara rather than standard Mustang seats. The 2001 Cobra got smoked headlights, kept the bumper with its “COBRA” logo, and a 31-spline differential in place of 1999's 29 splines. The 2001 Cobra had an MSRP of $29,235 for the coupe and $33,235 for the convertible, and is a great base car for modern aftermarket part improvements with the high-quality components offered through American Muscle.
