The Parts that Make Up the Convertible Top

Your Mustang’s top is more than just a piece of vinyl covering your head. Between the generations, not much changes except for how the running gear is configured. Since the Foxbody, engaging the top is a simple as pushing a button after undoing the latches. Aside from the pump that powers the top, you have to be mindful of the frame rails and bows, the header panel, the stay pads, and the weatherstripping. More often than not when replacing your top, you won’t have to replace the frame. In fact, most aftermarket tops are simply the top itself plus the back window. So what does the best Mustang convertible top replacement look like? Material thickness. Thicker tops won’t make as much noise on the highway and are all around most resistant to damage. The vinyl will also be treated with a mold and UV resistant coating.

Additional Features for Your Mustang’s Top

The main two features are color and the rear window. Your standard option is black, but you can also get tan or a bordeaux color. Black tends to go with any color pony, while tan tends to favor light colored Mustangs. Think white and similar. The reddish bordeaux color, on the other hand, is a bit harder to match properly, but when it does you can be sure you have the best looking ‘Stang on the block. The rear window can be either glass, plastic, heated, or non-heated. The glass-heated combo is the most expensive, but also the most convenient. While the plastic window is more flexible, it scratches easily. Having a heated window is also best for winter Mustangs for maximum visibility during frost season.
