The Parts that Make Up Your Mustang’s Exhaust

Before slapping the highest rated cat-back exhaust for your Mustang, understanding the other parts that make up the system will ensure you get the best exhaust for your Mustang. If you’re looking to augment sound over power, an axle-back exhaust is what you’re going to reach for. Replacing just the mufflers will do the most for sound but offer little in the horsepower department. Headers, on the other hand, are where the power’s at. Long tube headers for those of you looking to get the most out of your Mustang’s exhaust. Short tubes for those running turbochargers or not looking to replace their entire exhaust systems. Long tubes will require a compatible cat-back exhaust, but it is the best way to get the most power.

Which Parts to Upgrade First

Cat-backs are the easiest to install since they tend to simply replace your stock parts and utilize the stock hardware. Axle-backs are a close second, but some do require cutting and welding. Headers, regardless if they’re shorty or long tube, are a bit tricky since you’re working in the engine bay. You might have to remove other components to have enough space. If you want headers, but don’t have the budget, it’s best to do everything at once. The cat-back you get one day might not be compatible with the headers you choose the next day unless you scope everything out in advance. With long tubes, be sure to pick up oxygen sensor wire extensions.
