Stock Mustang Shifters vs Short Throw Shifters

The main reason you’ll hear in favor of short throw shifters is they make you feel more connected to your pony, but why is that? The stock shifters have a little bit of slop engineered into them mostly for comfort and reducing excess vibrations. You only need to remove the bushing on the bottom of the shifter to experience a rattling nightmare (not recommended). Short throw shifters reduce the lever that is the shifter for a quicker feel, but the best Mustang shifters also included tighter mechanisms that take the slop out. While this can contribute to a tad more noise, shaving of fractions of a second at the track adds up. The real goal of a short shifter is to keep you and your ride in the power band as much as possible. The less time your transmission is disconnected from the engine, the better.

Additional Shifter Improvements and Automatic Options

The MT-82 transmission is notorious for its sloppy shifter mechanisms and can even deform with more aggressive driving. Missing a shift is not only embarrassing, but it costs valuable seconds to recover and get back on the power. Billet aluminum brackets solve this issue, keeping your stock or aftermarket shifter in place no matter how fast you’re mashing on the gears. Always remember to replace the bushing and gasket when changing out your shifter. What if you’re building an automatic Mustang for drag? Ratcheting shifters allow you to convert your pony into a slap shift with a reverse lockout so you don’t accidentally destroy the transmission. If you don’t have a transmission shift kit installed, a ratchet shifter is a great way to get faster shifters without risking damage to the drivetrain.
