What Types of Shocks are There?

There are two main types of shocks: monotube and twin tube. Newer Mustangs with MagneRide introduce a third shock option completely separate from the standard aftermarket. Generally speaking, any aftermarket shock is going to be either mono or twin tube. Monotubes tend to be stiffer than twin tubes because of the higher gas pressures on one side of the piston. Monotubes are also less susceptible to air bubbles (also called cavitation). The main drawback is they’re more easily damaged. With a twin tube shock design, should a rock or some other object damage the outside casing, you won’t see oil come spilling out like you would with a monotube. MagneRide shocks use an entirely different fluid as well as electricity to control dampening.

Are Adjustable Shocks Worth It?

Adjustable shocks come in the form of coil overs, or a shock with a coil spring mounted on it. A dial at the top of the assembly controls stiffness. If you’re looking for a simple upgrade, coil overs aren’t the mod for you. However, if you want to take all the slop out of your Mustang’s suspension or tune it for a specific course, coil overs are the best shock for your Mustang. Coil overs will also drop your Mustang a couple of inches, so be sure to compensate with other adjustable suspension parts like caster camber plates.
