How to Install Hood Struts for a 2005-2012 Mustang

Tools Required
  • Flat-head Screwdriver
  • Ratchet with extension
  • 10mm Socket

Installation

1. Open hood and make sure hood is properly supported by the factory prop rod.

2. Starting on the driver side. Locate and remove the fender bolt shown below using the ratchet with extension and the 10mm socket. It is the closest to the hinge. (Note: Place a rage or fender cover on the fender to prevent possible scratching when removing the bolts.) 2009)

3. Install small bracket marked D-L and tighten using factory fender bolt as shown.

4. Remove the top bolt on the hood hinge shown below.

5. Locate the large bracket marked D-U. Now loosen the bottom bolt on the hood hinge just enough to slide the larger bracket between the hinge and the bolt as shown. DO NOT REMOVE BOTTOM BOLT. Tighten bottom bolt first and then re-install top bolt to secure bracket. ( Note: Align the top bolt holes before tightening the bottom bolt.)

6. Once the bracket is firmly secured to the hood hinge, install the gas strut by popping the ends over the ball mounts on the bracket as shown. (Note: If you need to remove gas strut after it is installed use the flat-head screwdriver to pop out the metal brace at the ends of the gas struts. Make sure to put the brace back on the strut before installing it again.)

7. Repeat steps 2-6 for passenger side hood strut to complete the installation.

8. Slowly lower the hood while checking alignment with fenders and bumper. Do not slam hood shut until proper alignment has been confirmed.

9. Now you can remove the prop rod by removing the single bolt at the bottom of the prop rod.

10. Enjoy your new hood struts.
