How To Install a Fuel Filler Neck Grommet Seal for your 1981-1997 Mustang

1. Disconnect Negative battery terminal 

2. Loosen lugs on passenger rear tire 

3. Raise car & put on jack stands along with removing rear tire 

4. Remove 8mm screw that is attached to the fuel tank (has a bracket attached to filler tube) 

5. While you are down there remove the 4 8 mm screws that are attached at the top of the filler neck---this is where you made need the extension as I did. 

6. Remove 2 t-15 screws and remove fuel door 

7. Next remove the 2 t-15 with rubber stops 

8. Remove the 3 8mm screws and set cap aside 

9. Remove your trunk lining if you haven’t done yet. 

To do this: 

1) Remove the 4 plastic plugs in the plastic piece that covers the trunk release. (where it opens) If you have a plug remover great if not I used a putty knife & needle nose to pull them out, then the 3 wing nuts 

2) Take off the rear & passenger side trunk lining. You’ll see the filler neck after that. 

10. Separate the rubber vent tube from the housing. I did this in the trunk. Once separated move the plastic housing out of the way. 

11. Now the fun part, go back down to the tank & wiggle/move the filler neck until it comes out. I had someone help me from the top in the trunk which helped a little. This is tricky just take your time & you’ll get it. BE CAREFULL TO NOT LET ANY OF THE GASKET GET IN THE TANK!! 

12. Just keep maneuvering the neck up, down and sideways ect. It will come out it’s just a pain! You may also try from the top if you have help. 

13. Once the filler neck is out remove gasket and clean area. Just be careful not to get anything in the tank. 

14. Grab the new gasket and use petroleum jelly or oil and lube it to make installation easier. 

15. Once on put some petroleum jelly or oil in the inner part of gasket for easy installation of the filler neck. Now carefully install the filler neck….once in your done. 

16. Install is reverse of removable!
