How to Install MAC Axle-Back Exhaust on your Mustang

Installation Time

1 hours

Tools Required
  • 11mm & 15mm sockets and ratchet
  • screwdriver or prybar
  • hammer
  • jack & jack stands
  • sandpaper
  • penetrating oil

  • Start by parking the car on level ground.
  • Set your emergency brake. Manuals in neutral, Autos in park.
  • Chock front wheels (in front of and behind) to ensure car does not roll.  Now you’ll need a jack and some jack stands. A floor jack with a long handle works best, directly under the center of the differential, but you can the screw jack that came with your mustang, it will just take a bit longer.
  • Jack the rear of the car up for clearance. Just enough to give room to work under the car.

Don’t get under the car UNTIL the rear of the car is safely resting on 2 jack stands. One on either side of the car, either under the rear axle or on the pinch weld jack points of the car. Ensure car is safe to work under.

  • Lower and remove jack.
  • Locate factory exhaust clamps securing stock mufflers to mid pipe. Using 15mm socket & ratchet, loosen clamps on muffler. Spraying some penetrating oil on now will help with removal. Rusty metal is hard to loosen.

  • Next locate and loosen the clamps on the factory mid pipe towards the catalytic converters, using 15mm socket and ratchet. Do not remove, this is just temporary while installing and adjusting new mufflers. Again, penetrating oil will help slide the clamps towards the rear of the car with a hammer and screwdriver for clips on clamps.

  • Using a hammer and a chisel or a pry bar, remove the factory mufflers from the mid pipe.  (Having the mid pipe loose and hanging from the front exhaust system helps a lot with removing the mufflers. Two people, one to pull each way on the pipe and muffler, while twisting.)

  • Remove the factory muffler from the rubber hangers pulling towards the front of the car.

  • Remove muffler from car. Repeat on other side. Clean rust on mid pipe with sandpaper.
  • Lubricate the rubber hangers with WD-40 or other similar lubricant for ease of installation of new muffler.
  • Install the mufflers into the stock mid pipe and loosely install the clamp with 11mm socket and ratchet.
  • Install new mufflers onto the rubber hangers.  Do not tighten yet. Here is where another helper comes in very useful.
  • Reinstall mid pipe to forward exhaust system with 15mm socket and ratchet. Do not fully tighten yet.

  • Align muffler outlet with opening in rear bumper. Can use tape measure or other measuring tools, calipers, etc. Or find where exhaust looks good from rear of car.
  • Hold mufflers in place while tightening clamps on muffler to mid pipe with 11mm socket and ratchet.
  • Move forward to front mid pipe while ensuring mufflers are still in correct position and tighten all loosened clamps with 15mm socket and ratchet.

  • Start car and check for leaks.
  • Jack car back up with jack. Once high enough, remove jack stands and lower slowly to ground.
  • Remove wheel chocks.
