Replace a Worn Or Damaged Distributor Drive Gear. In early model Mustangs, the 5.0L Windsor-based engine controls ignition timing through a single ignition coil, a distributor, and eight separate spark plug wires. As the ignition coil fires, a current is sent to the distributor, which utilizes a gear-driven electrical pickup to send ignition current to each cylinder based on the rotation of the camshaft. While a relatively simple and reliable system, your Mustang’s Distributor Drive Gear can experience wear and tear on the teeth’ contact surfaces, resulting in improperly timed ignition that leads to misfires, hard starts, a rough idle, and non-operation.
