Understanding Muscle Car Turbocharger Kits

If you've installed a bunch of bolt-ons and seem to have reached your naturally-aspirated limits, you’re probably considering forced induction systems like superchargers and turbochargers. When it comes to turbochargers, you’re looking at a forced induction system that uses a turbine to compress air and force it into the car engine.

Typically, these systems recycle exhaust gases and cause the turbine to spin and force more compressed air into the engine, which improves horsepower and torque. The same concept applies to superchargers with the main difference being that most superchargers are belt-drive whereas turbochargers are turbine-driven.

Benefits of Installing a Turbocharger on Your Muscle Car

The most notable benefit of installing a turbocharger on your muscle car is performance gain. Depending on how much boost you’re running and the size of your engine you can easily gain 200 to 300 horsepower with a turbocharger and tune. If you plan on hitting the track or you're turning your V6 Camaro into a sleeper build, this power gain will change the game for you.

Fuel efficiency is another benefit of turbochargers because they're more fuel efficient at the same level of power than a naturally-aspirated V8. So, if that's a big concern it's often cheaper over the short and long-term to install one on your V6 engine instead of Coyote-swapping your Mustang with a crate engine. Turbochargers also reduce emissions, so they're better for the environment than upgrading your engine size.

Turbocharger Accessories

The fun doesn't stop with the turbocharger itself because you can pair it with a lot of accessories to further improve performance. Ever hear that stu-stu-stu sound when a sports car upshifts? If you thought that was reserved for GTRs and other European sports cars, well, we have some great news for you. With the right blow-off valve, your muscle car can make that same head-turning sound. In fact, additional accessories can help you fine-tune that sound and make sure you’re releasing pressure in your turbocharged system at the right time.

While most accessories for your turbocharger are going under the hood, don't forget about the cabin. Boost gauges and boost controllers for your cabin ensure that you’re in full control of your muscle car’s turbocharger at all times.
