Performance Headers

Performance Headers

What Are Headers?

Chances are if you plan on upgrading your exhaust, you'll find that the topic of headers comes up often. Sure, installing an axle-back or cat-back exhaust is more fun, but if you don't have the right headers your engine will sound different, lack performance, and even feel sluggish. While most OEM headers on muscle cars are suitable for daily driving and your occasional burnout, you'll find that they come up lacking in the power department. If you want to maximize airflow and power, you need to consider upgrading to aftermarket headers. It's important to upgrade your headers because these exhaust components connect directly to your engine’s cylinders. Essentially, they're the first pipes that exhaust gases leave through, so having high-performance headers is a quick way to boost power. Also, if your OEM headers are damaged or leaking it can cause issues with your exhaust system and alter engine performance – not in a good way.

Long Tube vs Short Tube Headers

The biggest factor to consider when shopping for muscle headers is the type of header. Typically, you have two options, and they're short and long tube headers. Short tube headers, also known as shorty headers, are shorter than OEM headers which translates to more power at low RPMs. For some racing and drag builds, this is ideal if your engine struggles with low-end torque. We also love these headers for street driving because they're affordable and that low-end RPM boost is ideal for hitting the streets. Pairing aftermarket short tube headers with new intake manifolds and air intakes can further improve performance at low RPMs. Now, you also have long tube headers. Obviously, these are longer than OEM headers and they tend to produce more power at higher RPMs. This is great when you need racing headers to maximize your top-end power when you're hitting the track. High-performance long tube headers from brands like BBK are also great to pair with intake manifolds and tunes that maximize power at higher RPMs. All that said, short and long tube muscle car headers are great choices, so it comes down to a matter of preference along with how you drive.
