Odds are, at some point, you have thought about what it would be like for your vehicle to have more power. Many modifications can increase your car’s horsepower, but they can also be expensive and complicated. Upgrading your exhaust, though, is a relatively inexpensive and straightforward way to get some extra horsepower out of your engine.
With just one upgrade, you can get more power and a sportier tone out of your vehicle and enjoy getting behind the wheel.
How Does an Upgraded Exhaust Increase Horsepower?
Your car’s exhaust system may not seem like a place to start when you want to get more power out of the engine. Most of the time, people think about adding things like turbochargers, which can give you the power you want but can also be complex and draining on the fuel economy. A simple exhaust upgrade, though, can offer quite a bit in terms of horsepower while also improving the sound and feel of your car for a fairly small investment.
A couple of the ways an upgraded exhaust can increase horsepower include:
- Improved Flow – Any time you can improve the flow of exhaust in your vehicle, you are taking a strain off the engine. When the engine produces combustion, it also creates excess gasses that need to be expelled. By improving the flow, you are making it easier for the engine to create power, which increases the overall output of the combustion chamber.
- Reduced Backpressure – Every engine has some degree of backpressure when it is running. This is pressure in the combustion chamber that occurs when the exhaust can’t get out of the engine block fast enough. Backpressure can reduce efficiency and lower the amount of power that the engine puts out. With an upgraded exhaust system, you are improving the flow out of the combustion chamber and helping the engine run at peak performance.
How Much More Horsepower Will an Upgraded Exhaust Produce?
The amount of extra horsepower you can get from an upgraded exhaust system will depend on your engine and the other components of the vehicle. However, you can generally count on getting somewhere between 5 and 40 extra horsepower just by reducing the pressure in the engine and improving the flow of the exhaust. The type of exhaust upgrade you do and the condition of the engine will play a big part in this increase but it can be a noticeable difference, even at the most basic level.
Types of Exhaust Upgrades to Increase Horsepower
There are a few different upgrades you can do if you want to increase your vehicle’s horsepower. Not all vehicles are compatible with every upgrade, but even a small change can make a big difference. Knowing what types of exhaust upgrades are available will help you decide which ones are right for your specific vehicle.
Cat-Back
A cat-back upgrade is incredibly common and will give you a moderate boost in horsepower while also improving the sound of your engine. This mod replaces everything from the catalytic converter to the muffler and is a great way to improve exhaust flow without having to do much with the engine itself.
Headers
If you have a stock production vehicle, it most likely has an exhaust manifold that routes the exhaust gasses through the system. Replacing the manifold with headers increases the area in which the exhaust flows and creates a deep, low note that is synonymous with power and performance. While this upgrade can be incredibly effective, not every car will have enough room in the engine compartment for the new headers, so do careful measurements and make sure your vehicle can fit them.
High-Flow Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter is responsible for taking the harmful hydrocarbons in your vehicle’s exhaust and turning them into water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Every state requires a catalytic converter and many of the stock versions will increase backpressure in the exhaust. By upgrading to a high-flow catalytic converter, you can keep your vehicle in compliance with your local regulations while also improving the exhaust flow and getting more power out of your engine.
Tuning
Once you have done your exhaust upgrade, you may need to make some adjustments to your vehicle’s ECU. Your car needs the exact right mixture of air and fuel to create combustion. If you increase the flow of exhaust, you may also increase the flow of fresh air coming into the engine, which can cause it to run lean. For some vehicles, you might have to tell the ECU to inject more fuel into the engine to get the mixture right.
